Under Texas Local Government Code § 83.003, all county treasurers are required to complete continuing education to maintain their position. Within one year of being elected or appointed, a treasurer must successfully complete an introductory course on the duties of the office. After the first year, each treasurer is required to complete at least 20 hours of continuing education annually. These courses must be sponsored or cosponsored by an accredited public institution of higher education. Treasurers may carry forward up to 10 hours of excess education from one year to the next. Failure to meet these requirements may be considered incompetency and could result in removal from office under Chapter 87 of the Local Government Code. This statute ensures that county treasurers remain knowledgeable and effective in managing public funds.
